Welcome to Sixth Grade Social Studies! This year we will be learning about people, places and societies from regions all over the world. My goal for this class is to make learning fun and interesting, so that you will continue exploring the rich diversity of our world.  I also would like to help you become better at using technology to help you be more successful in high school and beyond. You will also be expected to think critically and express your thoughts through speaking and writing.

Things to Remember

  • Homework - will be assigned when concepts need to be reinforced through independent practice. Quizzes will be given the day after homework is assigned to make sure you are completing it.

  • Grades - Your grade in this class will be determined each 9 weeks term by the following formula:

50% Tests/Major Projects

30% Quizzes/Small Projects

20% Homework/Daily

  • Tutorials - If you need extra help, time to work on an assignment, or to retake a test, I am available most mornings 7:30-8:25 and afternoons  3:40-5:20. Just let me know that you will be coming, so I can make sure to be there.

  • Supplies - You will need the following supplies daily for my class:

               1) Pen or pencil

2) 1 inch binder (will be kept in classroom)

3) 70 sheet spiral notebook (will be kept in classroom)

4) two-pocket folder

5) student planner (issued to student on first day)

6) map pencils (colored pencils)

  • Make-Up Work - When you are absent, it is your responsibility to check with me to see what you have missed, schedule make-up tests, and arrange a time if you need to attend tutorials. If you are absent the day of a test, you are expected to take the test the day of your return. Lengthy illnesses are the exception and will be handled on an individual basis.

  • Testing Dates - dates for major tests and due dates for projects will be given to the student at least a week in advance. Please check your child’s planner daily for these important dates and homework assignments.

Parents,

Please feel free to contact me by phone or email to discuss your child’s progress throughout the year. I will not be able to answer emails or return phone calls until after school or during my conference period. I strongly believe that parent and teacher communication is the key to your child’s success.

It’s going to be a great year!

Sincerely,

Mary “Christy” Giordano
