Now
in his 15th year at Spring Oaks, Mr. Oliver is a passionate
science teacher, a caring leader, and a fine person.
Mr. Oliver doesn’t just teach science, he is passionate about the subject.
A retired geologist, he has a broad knowledge of and interest in science
that he shares with his students. His students respect and admire him. If
you were to enter his classroom, you would see him teasing, cajoling, and
encouraging his students. He is playful and sarcastic and uses his sense
of humor to motivate his students. At the same time, he challenges them to
learn at higher levels and refuses to accept excuses. There are two rules
in Mr. Oliver’s class. First, everyone participates. Second, the only
unacceptable answer is, “I don’t know.”
Mr. Oliver is a very creative teacher. He finds ways to hook his students
with an interesting fact, concept, or question. He is a tireless worker.
His attitude is “whatever it takes” when it comes to helping his students
achieve success. He even has a fondness for those students who drive other
teachers crazy. That is, he finds ways to get even the most difficult
students involved in learning.
As science department chair, Mr. Oliver goes out of his way to help his
colleagues. Whenever someone is experiencing difficulty, either
professionally or personally, Mr. Oliver is usually the first to offer
support. He has been known to bring flowers to co-workers to cheer them
up.
Finally, as
fabulous a teacher as he is, Mr. Oliver is one of the most humble people
you could ever meet. However great his contribution, he will always
downplay it and shift the praise to someone else. Mr. Oliver is a
wonderful teacher, colleague, and human being.
