School Principal

Retirement wasn't the end of Mark Smith's story in education—it was simply a brief pause.

After a 37-year career as a teacher, assistant principal, principal and central office administrator, Smith discovered he wasn't ready to step away from the work he loves.

He joined Spring Branch ISD (SBISD) as interim principal at Northbrook High School (NHS) and later Spring Woods Middle School (SWMS), where his leadership strengthened academic achievement, boosted student enrollment and inspired school communities. Now, he's bringing that same passion for students and proven leadership to Spring Oaks Middle School (SOMS) as its new principal.

"I believe every student deserves to feel valued, supported and challenged to reach their full potential," Smith said. "Building trust and strong relationships will always be my priority."

Smith believes the foundation of a great school is excellence and belonging. This school year, his goal is to build a culture where students are excited to learn, teachers feel empowered to make an impact and families know Spring Oaks is the very best place for their child.

"I'm excited to join the SOMS community because together we will create a school where excellence thrives, every student belongs and everyone is proud to call Spring Oaks home."

When he's not at school, Smith enjoys traveling during school breaks and spending time in his yard tending to plants and gardens. It's a fitting hobby for an educator who believes the greatest growth happens when people are nurtured, supported and given every opportunity to thrive.
